The story behind the print:
On December 17, 1777, when George Washington moved his army into winter quarters at Valley Forge,
his influence among members of Congress was at a low ebb. Congress was listening to self seeking
plotters and turning a deaf ear to Washington. Lack of money and supplies brought terrible suffering
to all stationed at Vallley Forge. Washington displayed admirable leadership in keeping up the spirit
of his army.
In 1933 the world was invited to the Chicago, IL. for the Worlds Fair. Charles Turzak, a prominent American artist was
at the year long event cutting woodcuts for his forthcoming biography of Abraham Lincoln at the Lincoln Village pavillion.
While at work demonstrating his woodcutting skills Mr. Turzak
caught the eyes and minds of officials from the Federal Hardware and Implement Mutuals company.
The officials were amazed at the woodcutting skills of Mr. Turzak and promised to return to see the finished series of Abraham Lincoln.
The story of the Biography Calendars.
Just before the end of the Worlds Fair these same officials returned to see the results of the Lincoln prints.
By this time Mr. Turzak had completed his work on the Lincoln woodcuts
and now turned his attention to woodcuts of Benjamin Franklin. So impressed by Charles Turzak's creative expertise
the officials of
the Federal Hardware and Implement Mutuals company commissioned Charles Turzak to do a series of calendars to
be given to valued customers of the Federal Hardware and Implement Mutuals company.
The stirring woodcuts in this calendar series were created by Mr. Turzak exclusively for the
Federal Hardware and Implement Mutuals company. The series would be eight calendars consisting of 12 woodcuts each.
The series featured such famous colonials as Benjamin Franklin, Patrick Henry, John Adams, George Washington,
John Marshall, Alexander Hamilton, and Thomas Jefferson.
